In Vitro Fertilization
BY Anima Das November 18, 2021
No matter how hard our past has been – with every sunrise we get a chance for a New Beginning…
In-vitro Fertilization refers to the process of fertilisation that takes place outside the body. This technique has been adopted ever since infertility has become a new epidemic. With the help of new-age technology fertility is extended to infertile couples who were unfortunately missing the opportunity to become parents naturally and genetically.
For finding solutions to infertility, IVF may be an option if in case you or your partner have been diagnosed with:
- Endometriosis
- Low sperm counts
- Problems with the uterus or fallopian tubes
- Problems with ovulation
- Antibody problems that harm sperm or eggs
- Sperm incapable of penetrating or surviving in the cervical mucus
- Poor egg quality
- Genetic disease of mother or father
- An unexplained fertility problem
IVF is never the first step for treatment of infertility except where there is complete tubal blockage. Also reserved for cases in which other methods like fertility drugs, surgery, and artificial insemination have not worked earlier.

The test tube baby procedure was made possible by scientist Robert Edwards and gynaecologist Patrick Steptoe in 1978 when the first test tube baby, Louise Brown was born in England. In 2010, Robert G. Edwards was honoured with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for developing IVF treatment. Presently IVF procedure has given hope to many couples who are suffering from fertility problems. Since the first test tube baby in 1978 till recently there have been millions of children who are born with the help of IVF treatment.
The IVF Procedure is carried out by mixing the egg and sperm together and injecting the formed embryos into women’s womb as given in above pic. By considering all the above factors and understanding the crises of birth and comparing them with emerging technologies and methodologies which assures parents to become parents of their child, every individual dreams about it. The advanced and novel technologies have brought the best results in IVF treatment. It also provides deeper insight into the causes of infertility along with making these procedures safe, efficient, readily accessible, and affordable.

By Dr. Sujatha Ramakrishnan
The world has witnessed the miracle of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in the year 1978 when Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART) facilitated the first successful birth. Later a few years down the line another success story was added with the help of a unique fertility treatment known as the ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) which was achieved in 1992, since then IVF has become a common procedure and has evolved many folds from its inception.
As in the article published by Utkarsh M Bansode, University of Solapur, the estimated cost of IVF treatment in various countries is as given below:
- U.S. A. – $12000 to $15000 (Rs. 840000.00 – Rs. 1050000.00)
- U.K – $8000 to $15000 (Rs. 560000.00 – Rs. 1050000.00)
- Singapore – $6500 to $10000 (Rs. 455000.00 – Rs. 700000)
- India – $3500 to $6500 (Rs. 245000.00 – Rs. 455000.00)
Hence, the best country to choose for the Treatment is India where it’s more affordable as well as the success rate is fairly higher in comparison to any other countries.
For new procedures and better results, patients with ICSI technology assistance in IVF, costs Rs.1,50,000 to Rs. 2,50,000.
By knowing the World facts about the treatment of IVF as well as the cost factor for this treatment we can say that India is the most preferable destination of IVF treatment.
On average 24% of embryos that are inserted into women’s womb in India have led to child birth. But researchers believe that this could even increase to 78% by using new techniques, by selecting the best embryos.
As per the report from 2018, it shows that 50% of IVF procedures in women aged 35 yrs and under resulted in a live birth. Those women aged 42 yrs and older 3.9% of the egg transfers resulted in a birth. For instance, a woman under age 35 who used her own eggs had a 37.6% chance of having a singleton (one baby) in comparison to a woman between ages 41 and 42 who had just 11% chance of success. This experimental procedure success rate increases with more egg transfers during the procedure.
Risks involved in IVF procedure :-
- Multiple births. IVF increases the risk of multiple births if more than one embryo is transferred to your uterus having a risk of child with low birth weight as well as early labour.
- Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome. Use of fertility drugs {human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)} to induce ovulation may cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. This may cause your ovaries to be swollen and painful and symptoms like mild abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may also be seen.
- Miscarriage. The risk of miscarriage for women who conceive using IVF with fresh embryos is similar to that of women who conceive naturally is about 15% to 25%. Risk increases with maternal age too.
- Egg-retrieval procedure complications. Aspirating needle that is used to retrieve eggs could possibly cause bleeding, infection or damage to the bowel, bladder or a blood vessel
- Birth defects. Mother’s age is the primary risk factor in the development of birth defects. Parents decide to go with this technique as their last option. This late decision increases the age of parents thereby reducing the success rate.
- Stress. Treatment through IVF can be financially, physically and emotionally draining. Support from counsellors, family and friends can help you and your partner go through the ups and downs of infertility treatment. There is no guarantee that it will be a success at the end of these draining sessions.
Olympus Microscopes for ICSI/IMSI Platforms – IX73 & IX83
For simple IVF procedure – regular ICSI System is used having Olympus IX73 Microscope, ON4 Narishige micromanipulator, Tokai hit heating stage along with CCD Camera and Monitor
For advance IVF procedure – we have IMSI attachment, 60X objective and DIC attachment along with EP50 or DP23 and above Camera
In order to increase the efficacy in IVF procedure more – Spindle Check System Model IX73 Olympus motorized unit with Polarization-based imaging system is used. This can provide new diagnostic capabilities.
