Molecular pathology is an emerging discipline within pathology that is centred around the subject and study of disease through the assessment of particles within organs, tissues or bodily fluids. The molecular diagnostic is a collection of methods used to examine biological markers in the genome and proteome, and how their cells reveal their genes as proteins, applying molecular biology to clinical testing. The strategy is utilized to analyze and monitor the disease, distinguish hazard, and decide which treatments will turn out best for individual patients.
Sometimes limited consideration is given to bone fixation and decalcification and bone samples are, at times, deserted in a container and drenched in a decalcification solution of obscure composition. A single pathology laboratory workflow rarely depends on one system. Specimens may need controlled transfer from theatre, fixation, decalcification, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining or hybridisation, imaging and record-keeping, and each stage has its own equipment. Specimen transfer, fixation, decalcification and processing
Pre-analytical workflow steps come first, so this group covers how tissue is moved and fixed. TissueSAFE plus is a vacuum system for formalin-free transfer of biospecimens from the operating theatre to the laboratory. SealSafe fills dedicated biospecimen bags with fixative such as formalin in a standardised, documented way. FixSTATION 1RH is a compact unit for managing fixation at a grossing station or inside a ventilated hood.
Bone needs particular care in molecular work: poorly controlled decalcification can leave tissue with poor morphology and genetic material of lower quality for downstream testing such as NGS. Milestone BoneSTATION and DecalMATE address fixation and decalcification, and DecalMATE lets histotechnologists tailor the process to the characteristics of each bone specimen. Tissue processing is covered by LOGOS, which uses Milestone’s microwave hybrid processing technology, and LOGOS EVO, which the product page describes as supporting automated or dual-run operation. Slide pretreatment, hybridisation and coverslipping
Many molecular diagnostic techniques, including FISH, rely on controlled slide preparation before detection. ThermoBrite from Abbott Molecular supports in situ hybridisation procedures, and HyperChrome is used for denaturation and hybridisation in FISH workflows. Freezing, sectioning, embedding and documentation
For frozen-section preparation, PrestoCHILL freezes specimens, and DSS lists its freezing time at 60 seconds.
