Cytogenetics
Cytogenetics is the study of chromosomal structure, location and function in a cell which includes the study of chromosome number and appearance, the physical location of genes on chromosomes, and chromosomal behaviour in processes of cell division.
- Chromosome abnormalities are seen through addition, deletion or rearrangement of genetic material.
- These abnormalities can be indications for phenotypic abnormalities of the patient or their disease states and chromosome analysis rules this out.
- Karyotyping is a visual observation of the chromosomes under the microscope through chromosome counting and its analysis.
- FISH is a molecular technique that uses fluorescent probes that bind to specific parts of the chromosome which is used to detect and localize the presence or absence of specific DNA sequences
