Cytogenetic Solutions
Cytogenetics is the study of chromosomal structure, location and function in a cell, which includes the study of chromosome number and appearance, the physical location of genes on chromosomes, and chromosomal behaviour in processes of cell division.
Chromosome abnormalities are seen through the addition, deletion or rearrangement of genetic material.
These abnormalities can be indications for phenotypic abnormalities of the patient or their disease states, and chromosome analysis rules this out.
Karyotyping is a visual observation of the chromosomes under the microscope through chromosome counting and analysis.
FISH is a molecular technique that uses fluorescent probes that bind to specific parts of the chromosome which is used to detect and localize the presence or absence of specific DNA sequences
